Air conditioner not cooling or not working?

Tell the specialist what the unit does and which room is affected. Warm air, water indoors, unusual noise and error codes are useful starting points. You do not need to identify the failed part before asking for help.

Call or WhatsApp directly about a repair. Confirm diagnostic or travel charges and appointment availability before a visit. Parts and repair costs depend on what the investigation finds.

When to stop using the AC

Stop using the system for burning smells, smoke, damaged wiring, severe abnormal noise or repeated electrical tripping. Do not keep resetting the breaker or approach wet electrical equipment. For an immediate fire or electrical danger, leave the area and contact emergency services.

Stop an indoor leaking unit to limit damage. Do not open service covers, reach into fans or disturb refrigerant connections. Only isolate the supply if you know how and can do so without approaching a hazard; otherwise leave it to a professional. Daikin’s safety guidance (PDF) describes warning signs.

AC not cooling or heating? Safe checks first

Only try these checks if there are no warning signs:

  • Mode and temperature: select cooling or heating as needed and check the set temperature. Fan-only mode moves air without changing its temperature.
  • AC will not turn on: check the remote batteries and timer settings. Note whether any indicator lights or error codes appear.
  • Airflow: look for curtains or furniture blocking the air openings. Follow the manual for accessible filters, without unsafe climbing or opening service compartments.

If the room still does not cool or heat properly, tell the specialist which rooms are affected and what has changed. Settings, airflow, controls and equipment faults are among the possibilities; the symptom alone does not identify the cause.

Leaks, shutdowns and unusual noise

AC leaking water inside

Stop the affected unit to limit damage. A restricted drain is one possible cause, but the drainage, airflow and equipment may need checking. Tell the specialist where the water appears. Some outdoor water can be normal during heating or defrost, depending on the system.

Air conditioning keeps turning off

If there are no warning signs, check the timer and your model’s manual. Some systems pause during start-up or heating defrost; a pause does not by itself prove a fault. Note the timing, settings and any error code if it keeps happening. Do not repeatedly reset the unit or deliberately reproduce an unsafe fault.

New or unusual noise

Say whether it comes from indoors or outdoors, and happens at start-up, during operation or at shutdown. Record it only if safe; do not climb to equipment or approach moving parts. Mention recent building work, power interruptions or repairs.

Does my air conditioner need regassing?

Weak cooling does not automatically mean low refrigerant. If testing identifies a shortage, the cause needs investigation. Adding more without addressing a leak or installation problem can leave the original fault in place.

Testing, recovery and charging belong with qualified technicians using the procedure for the equipment. The US Department of Energy’s cooling guide (PDF) distinguishes routine owner care from professional leak checks and refrigerant work.

How much will the AC repair cost?

Investigation and repair may take separate visits. Equipment type, access, test results and parts availability affect the options. Ask what the diagnostic charge covers and whether any work needs separate approval.

Once the cause is known, the repair price should identify the finding, parts, labour and testing. Keep a record of completed work and unresolved issues. An extensive repair can be compared with replacement; routine maintenance deals with ongoing care after the fault is addressed.

Air conditioning repair questions

Does an error code identify the broken part?

Not necessarily. A code points the investigation in a direction, but its meaning depends on the exact model and system. Copy it unchanged; testing may still be needed to find the cause.

The breaker trips when the AC starts. Is it the wiring or the unit?

Either may be involved. The circuit, connections, protection and AC equipment need proper investigation. Do not assume that a bigger breaker or a new dedicated circuit will fix it, and do not keep resetting it.

Should I book a service for a unit that is not working?

Describe the fault first. Maintenance and fault diagnosis do different jobs. A routine clean may help restricted airflow, but it will not resolve every cooling, drainage or electrical problem.
